Scot's Mailing list / Outgoing Messages / File Attachments

File Attachments

Use this to send files to your subscribers. However keep in mind that when you send attachments you are using up a lot more bandwidth and unless it's very important to attach a file, we recommend against it. Instead, have the file on your site with a link in your email message to it.

After you attach a file to a message using the utilities below, you won't have to do it again. Every time you send the message, the file will go out unless you've removed it from the system.

Before a file can be sent with an email message, it needs to be processed by Scot's Mailing List. File attachments in email are not actually files, they are simply blocks of text that are added to your email message. To efficiently send attachments, Scot's Mailing List pre-processes your files.

Uploading and Processing Files

In the utilities area, bring up the attachments manager by clicking on files and attachments. The attachment manager shows you which files are available for messages and gives you an option to upload a new file.

Click on the browser button and locate the file you want to attach, then click on the upload button. Depending on your connection speed and how large the file is, it could take a few seconds to a few minutes. If the file is too big, the process will probably time out.

Once your file has been processed and is in the list, you can attach it to messages (see below).

Edit the Filename

Click on the name of one of the files to bring up it's properties screen. The description is what the recipient will see as the name of the file in their email client.

File Types

You won't have to mess with these, but if you know what they are, you'll know what to do with them.

Attaching Files to Messages

Click on the messages link in the main administration. If you haven't made a message, create one first.

Click on the attachments link for the message you are going to attach files to so the file linking screen comes up. On this screen you can click on a file to attach it to the message, and once the file is attached, you can click on it again to remove it from the message.

Once a file is attached to a message, it will stay that way until you remove it.
