Scot's Mailing list / Mailing Lists / Subscription Verification

Subscription Verification

Anti-Spam laws of 2008 require you to follow a certain protocol when adding people to your mailing list. Very basically the protocol goes like this:

1. People must sign up to your mailing list themselves or have done business with you (then you can put them on the list unless they have requested otherwise).

2. Subscribers should get a validation email message so they can verify that they actually signed up.

3. Subscribers should have a very easy way to "opt-out" of the list by being able to click on an unsubscribe link in any messages you send out.

That's basically it. So verification is a way to legally allow people to opt-in to your mailing list.

How Verification Messages Work

In the custom messages area of your mailing list, one of the options is email validation. If you disable this, subscribers will be fully verified when they sign up. If you choose a message for this option, then the subscriber will be signed up as unverified and receive a verification message.

The verification message must have a subject, html, and text area. You should also set the screen up so the subscriber knows they are going to get an email. When the email arrives, your message and one more more verification links will be presented.

Verification links are created by the system and will replace the %validate% token in the custom validation message. If you have selected system for your verification style, then one link will verify the subscriber to all mailing lists they signed up to. If you have your verification style set to mailing list then the subscriber must click on a link for each mailing list that requires verification.

Set the validation style in the system configuration.

The %validate% token only works in the validation custom message.

Notes:

Verification emails will not work in test mode. All email functions except sending a test message from the delivery room are turned off in test mode.
